Big Ben – officially, the Elizabeth Tower – is one of the most iconic landmarks in London. The majestic clocktower marks the eastern end of the Palace of Westminster on the Thameside in Central London. When you choose hotels near Paddington Station as your home away from home, you are a stone’s throw from the UK Parliament and these other attractions around Big Ben.
Occupying the grounds of a former Benedictine monastery, this Gothic cathedral has provided the location for coronations since 1066. In addition, it has been chosen for 16 royal weddings, including the nuptials of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip and Prince William and Kate Middleton. As the official residence and office of the ruling monarch, Buckingham Palace is a major tourist attraction near Big Ben. Constructed in 1703, the palace was purchased by King George III as a gift for Queen Charlotte. When the ruling monarch is away over the summer months, the State Rooms and Throne Room are open to the public. We strongly encourage pre-booking your tickets in advance as they sell out quickly. It is possible to visit the facade at any time of year and observe the Changing of the Guard ceremony.

Oscillating on the London Southbank, the London Eye was added to the city skyline to tie in with the millennium. Each ride on the Ferris wheel lasts approximately 30 minutes and grants a panoramic view across the River Thames, Big Ben, and the rooftops of Central London. Conceived to commemorate Britain’s naval success in the 1805 Battle of Trafalgar during the Napoleonic Wars, Trafalgar Square is the setting for Nelson’s Column. This pillar honours the death of Admiral Horatio Nelson during the battle. In fact, the height from the top of Nelson’s hat to the ground is 170 feet and 2 inches, the exact same length from the masthead of HMS Victory to the quarterdeck. Trafalgar Square is where you’ll find the National Gallery as well as a sequence of art installations and sculptures.

The cousin of the Tate Modern, the collection at Tate Britain on Millbank is far more historic. Displayed in chronological order, the principal galleries walk you through British art from the Tudor period through the pre-Raphaelite movement up until the present day. Works on display include pieces by Turner, Moore, and Lowry. General admission is free to guests of the Central Park Hotel, Paddington. while special exhibitions are ticketed.
